Premier League forced to release statement as Kieran Tierney denied dream Arsenal moment

The have released a statement explaining why ’s Arsenal goal against Brentford was ruled out by VAR.

The Gunners thought that they had taken the lead in the 26th minute of the Premier League clash at the when Tierney headed the ball past Mark Flekken. However, despite the goal originally being given on the field, a replays showed that the full-back was in an offside position when the ball was played into the box.

A VAR check ensued and ruled the goal out for offside. It’s the first time in an Arsenal Premier League game that semi-automated offside is in use, which sped up the decision.

The Premier League Match Centre’s official X account have now released a statement, alongside a video of the animation created by the semi-automated offside.

“VAR checked the referee’s call of goal and established that Tierney was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed,” the statement read.

Arsenal go into the game knowing that a win would see them close the gap to Liverpool at the top of the table. Arne Slot’s side are not in action until Sunday afternoon when they take on West Ham at Anfield.

Had Tierney’s goal had counted, it would have been the perfect send-off for the defender. The Scotsman is set to leave the club at the end of the season. He has found game time hard to come by so far this campaign.

Changes being made with one eye on the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid in the week gave Tierney a chance to show what he can do in what could be one of his final appearances in an Arsenal shirt.
