There is good news for the consumers of the European Union (EU). Now all the smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices sold in the EU will have a special sticker named EPREL sticker. This sticker will give complete information related to the battery and energy efficiency of the device. This rule will come into effect from 20 June 2025, by the way, let us tell you that the Government of India has no planning regarding such stickers or labeling.
What is an EPREL sticker?
The full name of EPREL is - European Product Registry for Energy Labeling. We can also call this sticker an energy label in a common language. This sticker will help consumers to decide which product is more durable and energy efficient. In this label you will get to see the following information:
Energy class of the device.
Battery life and endurance.
Dust and water resistance rating.
Drop resistance (how safe is the device when it falls).
Repairability score of the device.
On which devices will this rule apply?
This rule will apply to smartphones, feature phones, tablets, and some other wireless devices.
All smartphones (whether they are on a cellular network or satellite network).
Feature phones without internet and third-party applications.
Tablets with a screen size of 7 inches to 17.4 inches.
Wireless phones connected to landline network.
Note: Mobiles and tablets with flexible displays are excluded from this rule.
Why is the new rule necessary?
The European Union has taken this step so that customers can buy durable and energy-efficient products. Along with this, this rule will also force companies to maintain quality and transparency in their products. Apart from the EPREL sticker, the EU has also laid down some Eco-Design rules in which the batteries will have to retain 80% capacity even after at least 800 charge-discharge cycles, the device should get adequate protection from falling, scratches, dust and water, companies will have to provide spare parts for 7 years, operating system updates will be available for at least 5 years, fair access to the necessary software or firmware will be mandatory for professional repairers, there are provisions like these.
What will be the benefit of this?
The EU claims that this rule will save about 14 terawatt hours of energy by the year 2030 and raw resources will also be better utilized through recycling. An EPREL sticker will now have to be mandatorily affixed on smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices sold in the European Union, which will provide complete information about the battery life and energy efficiency of that device.
