Mainpuri (Uttar Pradesh) [India], October 14 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Dimple Yadav expressed concern over the Durgapur gangrape case, and said that crimes against women are rising across the country.
Yadav called for strict action and a national-level effort to ensure women's safety.
Speaking to ANI on Monday, Dimple Yadav said, "Crimes against women are continuously increasing across the country. There should be a system in place where the strictest possible action is taken. Work should be done from a national perspective on how to create a safe environment for women."
On October 12, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a controversial remark advising colleges not to allow girls to go outside at night.
"I'm shocked to see the incident, but private medical colleges also should take care of their students, and especially girls. The girls should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night. They have to protect themselves also. There is a forest area. Police are searching all the people," Banerjee said.
Later, Chief Minister Banerjee claimed that the media "distorted" her words.
"The media distorted my words. You ask me a question, I answer it, and then you distort it. Do not try this kind of politics.", CM Banerjee said in Alipurduar.
A second-year student of a private medical college was allegedly gangraped in Durgapur. The victim, a medical student, is from Jaleswar, Odisha.
According to the victim's father, the medical student was taken by one of her classmates under the pretence of going to get something to eat. However, two or three other men arrived and raped her. The classmate abandoned her and fled.
West Bengal Police arrested two more accused in connection with the alleged Durgapur gang rape incident and produced them in a court on Monday. The Police have arrested five people so far in the case.
The gangrape has sparked massive outrage, with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of failing to protect women, while the ruling TMC slammed the BJP for allegedly politicising the incident. (ANI)
