On May 1, the Indian Army confirmed that Pakistani forces had violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) for the seventh consecutive day. The incident occurred on the night of April 30 to May 1, with unprovoked small-arms fire directed at Indian positions opposite Kupwara, Uri, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian forces swiftly responded with proportionate fire.
"During the night of 30 April-1 May, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across the LoC opposite Kupwara, Uri and Akhnoor in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. These were responded proportionately," Indian Army officials told ANI.
The ceasefire violations continued despite earlier diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue. On April 29, the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan held talks via the hotline. The Indian DGMO reportedly warned his Pakistani counterpart about the persistent violations along both the LoC and the International Border.
Escalating tensions in the aftermath of Pahalgam attack
The ongoing ceasefire violations come on the heels of a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. On April 22, terrorists backed by Pakistan gunned down 26 male tourists in a brutal assault. The attack has further intensified tensions between the two nations, and India has vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable.
India has responded to the Pahalgam tragedy with a series of measures aimed at countering Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism. These actions include suspending the Indus Water Treaty, shutting the Integrated Check Post at Attari, and curtailing the strength of its High Commission in Islamabad. Furthermore, India has revoked visas for Pakistani nationals living in India and sent them back to Pakistan.
India takes firm measures against Pakistan
As part of its broader response, India has taken decisive steps to tighten security and disrupt Pakistan’s operations. On April 29, India closed its airspace to all Pakistani-registered aircraft, including both commercial and military flights. The move, confirmed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, will last until May 23. This follows Pakistan’s own announcement of a similar airspace ban six days prior.
The closure of airspace marks a significant escalation, underscoring the seriousness with which India is treating the situation. The government’s actions indicate that India is willing to take strong measures in the face of continued provocations from Pakistan.
Operational freedom granted to Indian Armed Forces
In response to the heightened threat from Pakistan, the Indian government has granted the armed forces complete operational freedom in deciding their course of action. This includes responding to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and any further violations along the LoC. Security forces in the Kashmir Valley have also intensified anti-terror operations, aiming to dismantle terrorist networks operating in the region.
The Indian Army has maintained a strong defensive stance along the LoC, with recent reports indicating further ceasefire violations across other areas, including Baramulla and Kupwara districts. India has continued to respond effectively to these provocations, underlining its resolve to protect its sovereignty.
