Google is now rolling out AI Mode to all users in India. The new tab for AI Mode will now appear in Search and in the search bar in the Google app. The rollout will take a few days to complete, so it may be a while before all users are able to see it. AI Mode was first introduced in India last month as an experiment in Labs. The tech giant has now announced that it has started to roll out the AI Mode experience in Google Search, with no Labs sign-up required.
AI Mode in Google is currently only available in English. There is no clarity on whether this mode will be made available in local languages or not. The new AI mode allows users to ask Google Search for creative responses to long prompts, similar to what ChatGPT offers.
The AI Mode works in the same manner as ChatGPT but Google has made it extremely accessible. The new AI Mode button shows up on the Search Bar itself, right next to the microphone and Google Lens options. It doesn’t require any sign-in or sign-up, nor do users need to open another tab to use AI Mode.
Google’s AI Mode offers fresh answers to complex or multi-layered questions. It allows users to ask questions using images, by taking photos, or even through voice. For instance, say a user has received a new plant as a gift and isn’t sure where to start. Open the Google App for Android and iOS, snap a photo and ask: "What's this plant and give me instructions on how to repot and take care of it." AI Mode will grasp the visual details, identify the plant, and provide a detailed, step-by-step response, complete with links to articles. Users could also follow up with questions like, "Where should I place it in my home for best growth?"
AI Mode uses advanced reasoning and multi-modality, complete with essential details and links to explore. It uses a custom version of Gemini 2.5 that lets you ask longer, more complex or nuanced questions that would have previously required multiple searches. AI Mode is particularly helpful for exploratory questions and for more complicated tasks like comparing products, planning a trip, or understanding complex how-tos.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use AI Mode in Google Search:
1. Google App (Android or iOS): Open the Google app. You'll likely see a new "AI Mode" tab in the search bar or within the search results after you enter a query.
2. Google Search (Web): Go to www.google.com. You might see an "AI Mode" button or banner to activate it, or simply enter a search query and look for the "AI Mode" tab next to the "All" tab in the search results page.
3. Just like traditional search, type your question or topic into the search bar. Alternatively, you can tap the microphone icon and use voice input to ask your question. Users can also use Google Lens to upload an image and ask questions related to what you see. For example, you can snap a photo of a plant and ask for care instructions.
4. AI Mode will process your input and provide a comprehensive, AI-generated response, often including a summary and links to relevant sources.
5. You can ask follow-up questions to delve deeper into the topic, and AI Mode will remember the context of the conversation.
6. The responses may be presented in various formats, including text, images, and videos.
