In a landmark moment for Indian chess, veteran chess player Koneru Humpy will square off against 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh in the final of the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup, currently underway in Batumi, Georgia. The final is also special since this is the first time that two Indian chess players will be fighting for the coveted title, marking a huge milestone for women’s chess in the country.

Before this, no Indian woman had reached the semi-finals of this prestigious event. But this year, Humpy and Deshmukh did the impossible by reaching the final. Along the way, they overcame top-tier opponents from China in the semi-finals, underscoring their dominant form.

By reaching the final, both players have also secured their spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament the next crucial step toward challenging for the FIDE Women’s World Championship title.
Humpy, the veteran and current World No. 5, remains India's highest-ranked female player. Deshmukh, on the other hand, has made headlines as the youngest Indian to qualify for the Candidates in over three decades. Ranked 19th in the world, the teenager continues her meteoric rise. This final is a defining moment in Indian chess history.

The FIDE Women's World Cup Final match will start at 4:30 PM IST. They will not be telecast on TV but will be livestreamed on the FIDE YouTube Channel.

Koneru Humpy VS Divya Deshmukh FIDE Women's World Cup Final Format
Both players will have 90 minutes for their first moves. After that, the two players will get an additional 30 minutes to complete the match with an increment of 30 seconds per move.
If the match goes to a tie-break, the two players will first play two 10-minute matches with a 10 second increment. If there is still no winner, two matches of five minutes will play with a three-second increment per move.
If the two players again play a tie, there will be two three-minute matches with a two-second increment. From then, the players will continue to play 3+2 mathces until a winner if determined.
