Mumbai: The Maharashtra state government has approved the launch of electric bike taxi services in all cities with a population of over one lakh by issuing a government resolution on April 21st. Only passengers above 12 years of age will be allowed to travel using these services. Moreover, only electric two-wheelers will be permitted for this service.
To apply for a license, which will be issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) and valid for five years, aggregators must have a minimum of 50 e-bikes. The fare for the service will also be determined by the respective RTAs, according to GR.
As per the government resolution, all bike taxis must be of the same color, and the words “Bike Taxi” must be clearly displayed on them, along with the name and contact number of the service provider. Special attention has been given to women's safety. All bike taxis must have a partition between the rider and the passenger. Additionally, protective gear must be provided during the monsoon season. Each trip will be limited to a maximum distance of 15 kilometers.
Aggregators must operate via a secure mobile app or website that complies with all necessary safety and privacy standards.
Aggregators are also required to provide proper training to drivers. To ensure safety and quality, the rules mandate compulsory GPS tracking for all riders, emergency contact options, and strict background checks. The GR (government resolution) also states that drivers must possess a valid driving license and a transport badge. The eligible age for drivers is between 20 and 50 years, and they can work a maximum of eight hours a day. Proper training must be provided to all drivers before the service is launched.
Bike taxi services already available on apps before official rules:
Although electric bike taxi services have not officially started in the state, options to book bike taxis through apps are already available. However, these are unauthorized, and action is being taken against such operators, say officials.
Driver eligibility:
- Age: 20 to 50 years
- Maximum working hours per day: 8 hours

- Aggregators must provide proper driver training before starting service
