Mumbai: Mumbai and its neighbouring cities witnessed pre-monsoon showers on Tuesday night, giving temporary relief from the scorching heat. In Mumbai, areas like Dahisar, Jogeshwari, Borivali, Bandra,Kurla and Powai received thunderstorms along with rains towards night, while the city was witnessing dusty winds and cloudy skies since morning.
The IMD had forecasted that Mumbai would receive light rains and thundershowers towards the night of May 6 or early morning of May 7. The strong winds gave temporary relief from the scorching heat for Mumbaikars. While, it is predicted that the island city will witness drizzles on May 8 and 9, with generally cloudy skies.
The western disturbances are pulling in the moisture, due to which there are high chances of pre-monsoon rainfall in the state, the weather department said. On Tuesday, regions like Sinnar and Lasalgaon in Nashik received a hailstorm. In Mumbai, pedestrians found it challenging due to the dusty storm.
The pre-monsoon rainfall in the city is not likely to bring down the humidity levels, however, it will give slight relief from the scorching heat. Amidst the rising humidity levels, Mumbai has recorded the highest minimum of the year on Tuesday. The Santacruz observatory has recorded a minimum temperature of 28.9°C, which was 2.5°C above normal. The maximum temperature was 34°C.
The state of Gujarat is witnessing heavy pre-monsoon rains from two days. The effect of the western winds will be seen in Maharashtra too and 'Orange Alert' is issued for districts in the Vidharbha region. As per IMD, northern Maharashtra is likely to recieve more pre-monsoon rains with thunderstorms, compared to Mumbai and it's metropolitan regions.
