Harbhajan Singh's Masterstroke: Behind-the-Scenes Push That Brought IPL 2025 Playoffs to Punjab

Send Push

In what is being called the biggest off-field revelation of IPL 2025, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh is being credited for successfully persuading the BCCI to host two major playoff matches in Punjab’s Mullanpur Stadium. The Qualifier 1 and Eliminator will now be played in this newly built venue, a historic first for the region.

Punjab’s Big Break in IPL 2025

This season marked the debut of Mullanpur Stadium (New Chandigarh) as an IPL venue, hosting four league matches. However, it wasn’t originally in the running for the playoffs. That changed when IPL 2025 was briefly suspended due to India-Pakistan tensions, forcing the BCCI to reshuffle venues. Seizing the opportunity, Harbhajan Singh made a strong case for Mullanpur, sources say.

Harbhajan Singh’s Role Revealed

According to IANS sources, Harbhajan Singh—currently Chief Cricketing Advisor to the Punjab Cricket Association—personally lobbied BCCI officials, arguing that:

  • The weather in Punjab is ideal for high-stakes matches in late May.
  • The facilities at Mullanpur Stadium are up to international standards.
  • The local fan base is passionate and ready, ensuring packed stands and vibrant atmosphere.

Harbhajan also reportedly expressed disappointment over the diminishing number of matches in Mohali, and has been actively pushing for Punjab to host more marquee fixtures.

BCCI Gives the Green Light

On Tuesday, May 20, the BCCI officially confirmed that:

  • Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator will be played at Mullanpur Stadium.
  • Qualifier 2 and the IPL Final will be hosted at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

This announcement sparked celebrations among cricket fans in Punjab, marking a significant win for the state’s growing cricket infrastructure.

Mullanpur’s IPL Debut – A Success Story

The first-ever IPL match in Mullanpur was played on April 5, when Rajasthan Royals faced Punjab Kings. The stadium quickly earned praise for its facilities and crowd engagement. With the upcoming playoff matches, it now steps into the national spotlight.

Bottom Line

While teams battled on the field, it was Harbhajan Singh’s strategic lobbying behind the scenes that changed the game for Punjab. His efforts have not only revived regional cricket but also given fans in North India a front-row seat to the IPL’s most crucial clashes.
