Early Heart Attack Prevention: Heart attack comes suddenly, but the way to prevent it should not be so sudden. A recent study has revealed that there is a cheap and effective way to prevent heart attack, especially for those who have already suffered a heart attack. This research states that a combination of two low-cost medicines named statins and ezetimibe can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and prevent heart attack again.

what does the research say

Researchers from Sweden's Lund University and London's Imperial College analyzed data from more than 36,000 heart patients and found that if these medicines are used on time, it can be extremely effective in preventing heart attacks. Most importantly, if cholesterol is controlled in advance, the risk of heart attacks can be significantly reduced.

Why early treatment is important

After a heart attack, the body reaches a sensitive condition where the arteries become weak and the risk of another heart attack increases. However, many patients are not given cholesterol-lowering medicines immediately. Currently, the doctors' method is 'wait and watch', in which one medicine is given first and then other medicines are started as per the need, but not giving medicines at this time can cause harm.

Combination of statins and ezetimibe

Statins are already drugs used to treat heart disease. They reduce the amount of cholesterol in the liver, especially LDL cholesterol, which is considered bad. Ezetimibe, on the other hand, blocks the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. When the two drugs work together, they reduce cholesterol quickly and effectively.

What was found in this study

The study, conducted by researchers in Sweden and the UK, looked at heart attack survivors. Three groups were compared: those taking only statins, those taking ezetimibe later, and those taking both drugs within 12 weeks of the heart attack. The results showed that patients who were receiving the combination treatment early had fewer heart problems in the future, a lower risk of a second heart attack and a lower mortality rate.

Affordable and available medicines

The study also found that both of these drugs are already available in most countries and are not expensive. Ezetimibe is cheaper and has fewer side effects. Yet it is often overlooked in initial treatment.
