Fortnite proximity chat is reportedly on the horizon, with leaks suggesting that Epic Games is gearing up to introduce this feature in Battle Royale.

Fortnite offers a thrilling experience for most players lucky enough to get their hands on it. However, let's face it – for many, it's a highly social affair. Sure, you can go solo, but nothing compares to teaming up with a squad. The game makes group play enticing with easy party joining and coordinated cosmetics available in the shop, like the Fantastic Four range that was released not too long ago. With the addition of Power Rangers and the Shock 'N Awesome Battle Pass, coordinating Outfits is easier than ever.

Playing with mates is crucial, but squad-based games aren't always ideal as they often pair you with strangers you're expected to trust with your victory. Striking the right balance can be tough, especially when Fortnite emphasises cooperative play, particularly in competitive matches. It can be daunting to feel prepared for such a challenge.

However, this dynamic could soon shift, with new claims hinting at the arrival of a certain iconic feature previously seen in other modes. So, the question arises – is Fortnite about to introduce proximity chat?

The bully circle cometh

A fresh batch of posts from trusted Fortnite leakers has sparked speculation that proximity chat could be introduced in Fortnite's most populated modes. Leakers

and have teamed up on Twitter to suggest that the feature, which allows players to communicate with nearby teammates or enemies, might be coming to Battle Royale.

They've inferred this because Epic Games has shifted some files for the Creative Mode proximity chat, a feature present since August 2024 (

), potentially paving the way for its inclusion in the Battle Royale mode, where players could switch it on or off as they wish.

This would undoubtedly be a game-changing development – if players can directly address their opponents while they're down, it could usher in unprecedented levels of trolling. Players are likely to start goading the 13 year olds they've just knocked out before sending them back to the lobby.

It's unclear when this new feature might be launched, but there was a four-month gap between leakers hinting at proximity chat coming to Fortnite Creative (

) and its actual introduction, so we might be looking at a similar wait. Alternatively, the feature might just need to be dropped into the core experience for its official debut, so we could see it sooner rather than later. Brace yourselves for some serious ribbing from randoms in your lobby.
