'Most beautiful' Italian town is frozen in time with hardly any tourists

Rich in historical significance, the Swabian Castle represents the town's most important historical landmark, dubbed the "most beautiful" in Italy. The fortress was constructed in a location of considerable military and strategic value, reports the Express.

Following the castle's completion, the town developed as residents began to establish themselves there. In 1989, the final descendants of the family who possessed the Castle chose to gift it to Rocca Imperiale's local council. Whilst it may lack the magnificence of some contemporary fortresses, its heritage and antiquity make it an essential destination.

One visitor commented: "This place is great, it's quiet and clean. It is also located in the historic centre, very close to the castello walls. There is a beautiful sitting area on the piazza nearby, with a great view of the castello and surrounding countryside. The downstairs sofa bed was the most comfortable sofa bed I've ever slept in."
