Police have shut down an area near the U.S Capitol in after multiple people were stabbed.
DC police confirmed several people had suffered stab injuries following the incident around 3.45pm local time (8.45pm BST) this afternoon. In an update around half an hour later, they confirmed one person had been taken into custody.
One suspect has been arrested. Images from the scene showed a large emergency services presence, including multiple police vehicles. Several people have reportedly been taken to hospital. The amount of victims injured is still unknown, though it is understood no children have been hurt.

A police statement said: "MPD is on scene of numerous people stabbed in the area of Meigs Pl & Montello Ave NE. One suspect has been arrested. PIO en route to the scene."
