Just as the excitement around SS Rajamouli’s ₹1000 crore mega-project SSMB29 is building, lead actor Mahesh Babu has landed in serious legal trouble. A legal notice has been issued to him by the Rangareddy District Consumer Forum over his alleged involvement in the promotion of a controversial real estate project.
Why Is Mahesh Babu in Trouble?Mahesh Babu, who was reportedly paid ₹5.9 crore as the brand ambassador for Saisurya Developers, has been named in a consumer fraud complaint. The issue came to light when a woman doctor filed a complaint, alleging she was misled into purchasing property based on the actor's endorsement.
Key Allegations:-
The complainant claims she was influenced by Mahesh Babu’s promotional image to buy plots from the builder.
-
She paid ₹34.80 lakh per plot, but even after full payment, she did not receive possession.
-
When she demanded a refund, she received only ₹15 lakh back.
-
The developer involved is Saisurya Developers, whose MD is Satish Chandragupta.
-
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier issued a notice to Mahesh Babu in connection with the Surana Group and Saisurya Developers case, but he did not appear.
-
Now, the Rangareddy District Consumer Forum has sent a fresh notice, directing both Mahesh Babu and the developer to appear with their legal representatives by July 8.
-
Satish Chandragupta has also been served a legal notice.
While Mahesh Babu may not have been directly involved in the real estate dealings, the use of his image in promotion holds him partially accountable in consumer court under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, especially if endorsement guidelines are violated.
Bigger Implications:-
The complaint could potentially set a legal precedent for celebrity endorsements in India.
-
This adds pressure at a time when Mahesh Babu is immersed in filming SSMB29, a globally-anticipated movie directed by Rajamouli, rumored to have a ₹1000 crore budget.
-
If the matter escalates or drags out, it could affect the public perception of the actor — especially as the court appearance date clashes with the film’s critical shooting phase.
So far, there is no official confirmation on whether Mahesh Babu will appear in court on July 8. His team has not released a public statement. Given his filming commitments, it remains unclear whether his lawyers will represent him in his absence or whether he will be compelled to appear in person.
