Drivers were set for traffic woes on Monday afternoon as a police incident prompted long delays. The A1(M) was closed in both directions before 5pm on October 27.
Traffic cameras showed long delays, stretching from M1 Aberford By Pass to J44 A64 (York/Tadcaster). West Yorkshire Police said the incident concerned a "pedestrian".
In a post on X at 4.32pm, National Highways said: "Traffic is currently stopped on the #A1M in both directions between J43 #M1 and J44 #York #Leeds.
It added that West Yorkshire Police are "currently dealing with an incident involving a pedestrian and require the traffic stopped to ensure safety", and that there are long delays in both directions.
In a subsequent update at 4.49, National Highways traffic has now been "released on the #A1M between J42 #Selby #A63 and J44 #York #Leeds", following the closure.
National Highways said West Yorkshire Police "have now safely resolved the incident and both directions have reopened and traffic is now flowing".
However, it added that here are "long residual delays with several miles of congestion in both directions".
