Brits have been urged to leave logs outside next month as it could give wildlife a brilliant boost. Birds are a lovely addition to the atmosphere of your garden, but they're also crucial to the ecosystem.
Avian creatures do their bit by going after pests like insects, spiders, and worms to keep your plants healthy. But with the arrival of autumn and colder conditions, you may need to do a bit of extra work to ensure your plot is especially inviting. Birds tend to be more scarce due to the lack of food for them around.
Emma O'Neill, head gardener at gardenorganic.org.uk, offered a few tips on how to keep the winged critters coming back, even during cooler periods.
Speaking to Express.co.uk she recommended gardeners create "small piles of logs as habitats for insects so birds can forage for them".
"Leave some windfall fruit, if you have an abundance," she added.
"This is a particular favourite with blackbirds and thrushes," said Emma.
The gardening guru also stresses you should always "leave fresh water out daily".
Another way of helping them stay interested is keeping some plants they feed from.
"Don't be too quick to cut everything down, leave plants that have seedheads, which birds love such as Echinacea, sunflowers and Eryginum," she said.
October is also a crucial month for the future health of your garden, Ms O'Neill says.
She revealed two key tips for setting your plot up to flourish next year, emphasising the importance of green manures.
