Clean the inside of the washing machine with 1 common household ingredient

Built-up detergent, , and even stray can cause nasty odours, reduce performance, and shorten your machine's lifespan. But according to experts at Molly Maid, there's one simple household ingredient that can get your sparkling again.

"Learning how to the inside of a is easier than you might expect," the team at Molly Maid notes. They recommend starting by removing any detachable parts, like the soap dispenser drawer. "Take [it] to the sink and scrub with a toothbrush and ," they advise.

If the parts aren't removable, just fill them with white vinegar and leave them to soak while you clean the rest of the machine.

One area people often forget is the rubber gasket - the grey seal on front-loading washing machines.

Wipe it thoroughly with a vinegar-soaked cloth to remove mildew, grime, and detergent residue.

"Use a cloth, a toothbrush, and white vinegar to scrub the crevices inside the machine," the cleaning gurus at Molly Maid adds.

It's also important to check for filters inside the machine that may be collecting hair, lint, and debris.

Front-loading washing machines may also have a small panel near the base that collects coins, buttons and other items.

Not all models have this feature, but if yours does, it's worth giving it a good clean.

For a full refresh, you can also run an empty hot cycle with two cups of white vinegar in the drum.

This helps dissolve any lingering build-up of grime and deodorises the machine. Repeat this process monthly to keep your washing machine running smoothly and smelling fresh, the team at Molly Maid recommends.
