Washing machines are vital in our daily lives, keeping our clothes fresh and clean. However, amidst all the washing and spinning, one area that often needs to be maintained is the rubber seal of the washing machine. It creates a watertight seal between the door and the drum, preventing water from leaking during the wash cycle.
However, if not properly maintained, the rubber seal can also become a breeding ground for mould and mildew. The mould can then cause an unpleasant odour that can attach itself to your clothes. To remove the mould, the cleaning experts at Smol first recommended using any all-purpose cleaner they have to hand to try and tackle the job. However, if that "hasn't shifted all the marks", they recommended using an "effective" household ingredient - white vinegar.

They explained how powerful this natural liquid is, as "vinegar kills mould more effectively than bleach".
They said: "Bleach only kills mould spores on the surface of affected materials, whereas vinegar can penetrate porous materials, killing mould at its root."
You may have seen warnings about using vinegar in washing machines. Yet, claims that it damages the workings or perishes the gasket are "never backed up with studies or hard facts".
While leaving an acid like neat vinegar on a surface for weeks on end could allow it to have an impact, using vinegar in a wash where it is diluted with water or making a solution and wiping it back off is not the same. The cleaning pros pointed out: "People have been doing this for decades without damaging their washing machines."
For this method, mix equal parts warm water and clear vinegar, then, using your cloth, apply it to the seal.
Rub the solution into the mould stains and then leave it to sit for 15 minutes. After, rinse off the area with a damp cloth and clean warm water.
It's recommended then to run a hot water cycle without any clothes, just a cup of white vinegar. The hot water and vinegar combination will help remove any scum or buildup inside the machine.
Once the cycle is complete, ensure the machine dries completely. Use a clean, dry cloth or towel to wipe the seal and remove excess moisture.
Leaving the washing machine door open for a while after this and every wash cycle aids drying by allowing air circulation. This step helps prevent the mould and mildew growth in the future.
