When most travellers think of Italian island getaways, and tend to steal the spotlight. But, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, just an hour's ferry ride from Naples, is a volcanic jewel that's just as stunning but a whole lot more peaceful, and a perfect 30C in July.
Known as Italy's spa island, Ischia boasts 103 natural thermal springs, bubbling with mineral-rich waters that have drawn health-seekers and relaxation lovers for centuries. The island's volcanic origins have blessed it with more than just dramatic landscapes, these springs are said to offer healing properties for everything from skin ailments to arthritis.
Whether you're soaking in a seaside spa, visiting the historic thermal gardens of Poseidon, or simply unwinding in a steamy natural pool carved into the hillside, Ischia is a wellness retreat like no other.
But the island's charm goes far beyond its rejuvenating water.
Before tourism took centre stage, Ischia was a humble agricultural haven, famed for its wine production.
Vineyards still lace the hillsides and you'll find rustin cantinas serving crisp white wines made from native Biancolella and Forastera grapes, perfect for sipping with local seafood as you overlook the sea.
In the late 1950s and 60s, Ischia had its moment in the cinematic spotligh as it became a favourite backdrop for European filmakers and a glamourous hideaway for stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Today, the island still gives a nostalgic nod to that era with pastel towns, vintage cafe and luxury seaside villas.
While tourism is Ischia's primary economic driver, it remains wonderfully unspoiled.
Sundrenched beaches without crowds, rugged cliffs, lush gardens, and the dramatic Aragonese Castle rising from the sea.
It's a place where life moves a little slower, meals stretch long into the afternoon, and sunsets are best enjoyed with a glass of local wine in hand.
