Dhanbad/Ranchi: Three first-semester students were injured in a clash between two groups of students on the BIT Sindri campus late Monday night.

The incident occurred inside the institute's mess, where the confrontation quickly escalated from a verbal spat to a full-blown physical fight.

Police said that first and the third year students clashed with each other after disputes over use of college's gymnasium and seating arrangement in the canteen.

The local police, which received information about the incident at around 8:30 pm, rushed to the spot and separated the two groups. The BIT administration subsequently took the injured persons to the hospital.

"We were having dinner when a group of students stormed in and began assaulting us," said one injured junior student, who sustained a head injury. "They hurled chairs and tables at us," he added.

Mobile footage of the incident, reportedly recorded by junior students, went viral overnight. The videos show students wielding sticks and hockey bats, moving aggressively inside the campus. Some are seen vandalising vehicles and damaging mess property.

Sindri SDPO Ashutosh Satyam said, "The process of identifying those involved in the clash is underway. Necessary legal action would follow."

The BIT Sindri had not lodged any complaint in this connection yet.

BIT Sindri director Pankaj Rai said, "A scuffle broke out between senior and junior students late Monday night. We are conducting a thorough investigation and identifying those involved. Students found guilty would face disciplinary action."
