Manish Goel: Why can't we have male-centric TV shows?

Manish Goel, who was last seen in a cameo in the TV show Kyunki... Saas Maa Bahu Beti Hoti Hai recently joined the cast of Anupamaa. Reflecting on the changes he’s witnessed in the television industry over the years, he shares, “In the past, there was much more patience and resilience when it came to understanding a show and giving it time to grow. Today, shows are often axed within a few months, and it’s disheartening to see the entire team and actors bearing the consequences. My suggestion is simple - give every show at least six months to find its audience. Relying on a week’s TRP ratings to determine a show’s fate isn’t fair.”

While he appreciates how television has evolved in portraying women, he also envisions a future where male-centric stories find their place on the small screen. “Women are no longer just portrayed as bahus or bhabhis. They’re taking on diverse roles — whether it’s an astronaut or a chef — standing strong and fighting for others. This is a significant shift, showcasing women as strong, empowering figures,” he says, adding, “I’m happy with my role in Anupamaa, but why can’t we have male-centric shows, too? If the storyline is gripping and filled with exciting twists, it could work just as well. Television, and all media today, is driven by great writing, and content truly is king.”

On the work front, Manish, who started his acting journey with Just Mohabbat, has been part of many TV shows such as Bandhan, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Ghar Ek Mandir, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Bhabhi, Saara Akaash, Betiyaan Apni Yaa Paraaya Dhan, Meri Awaz Ko Mil Gayi Roshni, Bhagyalaxmi, Ayushman Bhava, Nimki Vidhayak and Hamari Wali Good News. He portrays the character of Raghav in the long-running show Anupamaa, which stars Rupali Ganguly in the title role.
