AGRA: The Taj Mahal remains the top tourist preference in India and has earned "the highest income - over Rs 297 crore" through ticket sales among ASI-protected monuments between the financial years 2019-20 and 2023-24, as per data shared by the Union govt in the Rajya Sabha.
Responding to a question from MP Abdul Wahab, Union culture minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed the Upper House that during the same period, Agra Fort received over Rs 64 crore from ticket sales.
Apart from the Taj and the Agra Fort, several other monuments, such as the Sun Temple in Odisha, Golconda Fort in Telangana, Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, and Fatehpur Sikri in Agra, feature among the top 10 ASI monuments in ticket sales.
Between the financial years 2019-20 and 2023-24, Odisha's Sun Temple earned over Rs 34 crore, while the Golconda Fort earned Rs 16 crore, and the group of monuments in Tamil Nadu's Mamallapuram earned over Rs 32 crore. The total earnings of ASI were over Rs 900 crore between the financial years 2019-20 and 2023-24.
In FY19-20, Agra Fort and Qutub Minar were in the second and third positions. In FY20-21, the group of monuments at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu and the Sun Temple in Konark were in the second and third positions.
In FY21-22, the Red Fort and Qutub Minar secured the second and third positions. In FY22-23, Agra Fort and Qutub Minar in Delhi were in second and third place, respectively, while in FY23-24, Qutub Minar secured the second position, and the Red Fort was third.
