X unblocks Reuters in India: Government stepped in, says didn't request takedown

NEW DELHI: Social media platform X restored access to international news agency Reuters ’ official account in India on Sunday after government officials stepped in.

The account became unavailable for Indian users on Saturday and it was showing the message “withheld in India in response to a legal demand.” The same message had also appeared on the X handles of Turkiye’s TRT and China’s Global Times.

However, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ( MeitY ) said on Sunday that the Indian government had made no such request.

“There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters handle,” an official spokesperson for MeitY said. “We are continuously working with X to resolve the problem.”

X, which is owned by Elon Musk, explains on its Help Centre page that such messages mean content has been withheld due to a valid legal request, such as a court order or under local laws. This could apply to entire accounts or specific posts.

“If you see the above message, it means X withheld content based on local law(s) in response to a report filed through specific support intake channels,” the platform’s support page notes.
