7.4 magnitude strong earthquake hits coast of Argentina

A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit southern coasts of Argentina and Chile on Friday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami alert just minutes later.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicentre was located under the ocean, about 219 kilometres (173 miles) south of Ushuaia, Argentina.

Chilean authorities have issued an evacuation alert for the entire coastal area along the Strait of Magellan in the country's far south, after citing the threat of tsunami.
