In a major move to control noise pollution in the capital, Delhi Police has issued fresh directives regulating the use of loudspeakers and public address systems. According to the new order, no religious place or public venue will be allowed to use loudspeakers beyond permissible decibel limits. Prior police permission is now mandatory for installing any loudspeaker or sound system in public spaces.
Tent houses and audio equipment suppliers have also been brought under the scanner, requiring them to obtain written approval from local police before lending sound equipment. Any non-compliance may attract penalties, including fines and equipment seizure.
Decibel Limits and Penalties: What the New Rules SayThe order strictly defines noise limits across different zones and times:
-
Industrial Zones:
-
6 AM to 10 PM Up to 75 dB
-

Privately owned sound systems are not allowed to exceed the set limit by more than 5 dB. Any violation may result in a fine of ₹10,000 and seizure of equipment.
BJP’s Role and Enforcement DriveSources suggest that the latest crackdown has political backing, with the BJP demonstrating a firm stance on maintaining public order and discipline. This is especially being seen in areas where violations have been rampant. Authorities have been instructed to take strict action, particularly in sensitive zones where previous complaints were ignored.
District DCPs have been directed to ensure all sound equipment suppliers comply with the guidelines, and legal action will be initiated against those who fail to follow instructions.
Other key penalties include:
-
Generator Set Fines:
-
Above 1000 KVA ₹1,00,000
